Red Velvet make a major case for being one of the K-pop girl groups to watch in America with their new chart accomplishment.
The quirky quintet’s latest EP titled The Red Summer: Summer Mini Album debuts at No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart, giving the group its third chart-topper on the list. The Red Summer sold about 1,000 copies in the week ending July 13, according to Nielsen Music, which marks the group’s best U.S. sales week to date. The EP also debuts at No. 8 on the Heatseekers Albums chart for their first top 10 on the ranking that sees far fewer K-pop artists.
Previously, Red Velvet topped World Albums with their full-length album The Red in 2015, along with their Rookie EP released in February. The ladies now pulls ahead of their senior groups like Girls’ Generation, f(x) and Girls’ Generation-TTS, the only other girl groups to have multiple No. 1 entries on World Albums. Among all K-pop acts, Red Velvet only trails B.A.P and GOT7, both with four albums that have topped the chart summit.
As the first girl group to debut from Korean superlabel SM Entertainment during K-pop’s post-“Gangnam Style” era, Red Velvet has seemingly continued the high-performing success that other recent SM girl groups (Girls’ Generation and f(x)) began. Red Velvet has actively kept America and international markets in mind, not only with their performances (including an early appearances at KCON 2015 along with a headlining slot at SXSW this year), but with a constant stream of accessible, exciting releases. Interestingly, Summer gives RV their third No. 1 on World Albums just after Blackpink (the new girl group from fellow Korean superlabel YG Entertainment) earned their third No. 1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart.
Red Summer undoubtedly looks to continue the group’s winning streak with one of their sunniest releases yet in lead single “Red Flavor” with its uplifting chord progression and shining vocal moments. The tropical house–inspired “Zoo” (done by “Dumb Dumb” producers LDN Noise) keep the tropical, summer vibe going as the melancholy synth-pop in “You Better Know” and chilled-out, orchestral R&B in “Hear the Sea” represent the quieter, late-night moments of summer.
Elsewhere on the charts, Red Velvet’s “Red Flavor” debuts at No. 4 on World Digital Song Sales for their 10th hit on the chart, and ninth top 10 entry. Their best entry to date is “Russian Roulette” which hit No. 2. Watch the ladies bring their new single to life in a live performance below:
