Rage Against the Machine’s Streams Leap 48% After Reunion Announcement

The band reaches Top Rock Albums and the Social 50 after the Nov. 1 news.

My Chemical Romance isn’t the only band scoring major sales and streaming gains after a reunion announcement. Rage Against the Machine, which revealed its return to performing a day after MCR on Nov. 1, drew surges for its catalog in the tracking week ending Nov. 7.   

The rap-rock band bounded by 48% to 8.6 million on-demand streams for its catalog in that span, according to Nielsen Music. Additionally, the quartet earned 7,000 album units (up 69%), 2,000 of which were via album sales, as well as 3,000 song downloads.   

Leading the way, Rage’s self-titled 1992 debut LP bows at No. 42 on Top Rock Albums with 5,000 units.   


Meanwhile, the streaming-, sales- and airplay-based Hot Rock Songs chart (where older songs are eligible to appear if ranking in the top half and showing a meaningful reason for their return) welcomes the band’s “Killing in the Name,” the 1992 set’s lead single, at No. 15 with 1.9 million streams and 1,000 sold.  

The band also makes its premiere appearance on the Social 50 chart at No. 45 on the strength of 57,000 views to its Wikipedia page (up 285%), according to Next Big Sound.

As of now, Rage Against the Machine is reuniting for five shows throughout the Southwest and the West Coast in the United States beginning March 26, 2020, in El Paso, Texas, and including sets on both weekends of 2020’s edition of Coachella. The band last performed live in 2011.
