Breakout hit “No Flex Zone” propelled the group into the hip-hop scene in 2014, when it climbed to the Hot Rap Songs top 10 (No. 8 peak, week of Sept. 27). SremmLife includes the lead track, as well as follow-up singles “No Type” and “Throw Sum Mo.” The young sibling emcees (brothers Khalif “Swae Lee” Brown and Aaquil “Slim Jimmy” Brown) from Mississippi also leap 29-7 on the Billboard Artist 100, aided by the album’s entrance as well as airplay, sales and streams of various tracks from the set.
On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, “No Type” reaches a new peak stepping 4-3 in its 16th week. The down-tempo track continues climbing across mediums, with streaming tallying 6.9 million weekly clicks (down three percent), according to Nielsen. Despite the slight decline, the song rises 3-1 on Rap Streaming Songs, their first song to top the chart. The video clip for the song totals nearly 100 million global views on Vevo on YouTube since it’s Sept. 17 release (3.8 million U.S. streams in the week ending Jan. 11).
Also on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs,”Throw Sum Mo,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Young Thug, rises 26-24 in its fifth frame. Newest song on the list, “Up Like Trump,” dips 42-43 in its third week.
‘Ayo’ Arrives: Chris Brown and Tyga each earn their highest debuts yet on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as their collaborative effort “Ayo” arrives at No. 10. With the entrance, Brown scores his 33rd top 10 while Tyga gets his fifth. Digital sales of the track greatly support the Hot Shot Debut’s ranking, with 90,000 downloads recorded in its first week, enough to start at No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs.
‘Empire’ Spawns Hits: The premiere of Empire, the new Fox TV drama centered around a hip-hop empire, on Jan. 7, drives two songs by the cast onto Hot R&B Songs, buoyed by first-week download sales. Opening at No. 14 is “Good Enough” featuring Jussie Smollett (23,000), while “What Is Love,” featuring Veronika Bozeman enters at No. 20 (16,000).
Both songs appear on the five-song EP, Empire: Music From The Pilot, which debuted with 7,000 copies sold, taking the No. 8 spot on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The second episode’s accompanying EP, Empire: Music From ‘The Outspoken King’ was released on Jan. 13 and is expected to impact next week’s charts.
