Radiohead & Andy Black Lead Top Rock Albums Debuts

Radiohead's 'A Moon Shaped Pool' becomes its third No. 1, while Black appears with his first solo album outside Black Veil Brides.

Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool becomes the band’s third No. 1 on both Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums, as the set debuts at the summit with 173,000 copies sold in the week ending May 12, according to Nielsen Music.

The LP, the English rock band’s ninth studio effort, follows 2011’s The King of Limbs and 2007’s In Rainbows as previous No. 1s on both charts. (Both charts launched well into Radiohead’s career; Top Rock Albums chart began in 2006, while Alternative Albums followed suit in 2007. Radiohead’s first album was released in 1993.) It’s also the quartet’s best-selling record since 2003’s Hail to the Thief, which moved 300,000 in its first week.

Three Radiohead songs appear on Hot Rock Songs as a result of the new album’s release. Lead single “Burn the Witch” finds a new peak of No. 9, becoming the rockers’ first top 10 on the chart (which premiered in 2009), while the follow-up “Daydreaming” is the Hot Shot Debut at No. 12. Additionally, “True Love Waits,” long a sought-after rarity in the band’s catalog that finally received a studio version on A Moon Shaped Pool, debuts at No. 43.

Elsewhere, Andy Black debuts at No. 2 on both Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums with The Shadow Side (18,000 sold), the Black Veil Brides frontman’s debut solo set. The band’s previous two LPs, 2014’s self-titled release and 2013’s Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones, also started at No. 2 on Top Rock Albums. Meanwhile, Black’s Alternative Albums rank is his first on the chart, as his band is historically placed on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart (where he’s landed a trio of chart runners-up). Concurrently, Side single “We Don’t Have to Dance” returns to Hot Rock Songs at No. 40 after previously reaching No. 23.

The other Top Rock Albums top 10 debut belongs to the Goo Goo Dolls, whose Boxes starts at No. 3 with 15,000 sold. It’s the veteran band’s fifth set to debut in the chart’s top 10; its previous two titles, 2013’s Magnetic and 2010’s Something for the Rest of Us, started at No. 2. The Boxes tune “So Alive” concurrently rises on Hot Rock Songs, moving 41-29 after debuting last week.
