Publishing Briefs: Sony Honored as BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Publisher of the Year

This week in publishing news: IMPEL partners with SX Works and CMRRA, Brandyn Burnette signs to Position Music, and more.

At BMI’s 2022 R&B/Hip-Hop Awards on Sept. 7, the performance rights organization honored Sony Music Publishing as its Publisher of the Year with 20 total top-performing songs in the genres. BMI also honored SMP writers Giveon and Bernard “HARV” Harvey for being an integral part of its Sony of the Year, “Peaches” by Justin Bieber.

SMP’s 2022 honorees include Adam Rich Foster, Ambezza, Bernard “HARV” Harvey, Bobby Sessions, Charalambos Antoniou, Craig Love, Giveon, Henock Siyoum, Julian Mason, Kanye West, aka Ye, Kelvin Wooten, Luis Campozano, Jason Avalos, Jonathan Priester, Maneesh Bidaye, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Tjay, Lil Nas X, Noah Pettigrew, Pardison Fontaine, Rico Beats, Rod Wave, Ryan Vojtesak, Tahj Money, Tems, TM88, Tobias Dekker and Wizkid.


IMPEL, SX Works Global Publisher Services, and the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) have announced the completion of a strategic partnership to expand licensing and administration opportunities both in North America and around the world. The new partnerships will enable the independent music publishers part of IMPEL to license digital rights directly in Canada via CMRRA and in the U.S. via SX Works. IMPEL members can also use CMRRA to license for physical products and broadcast mechanical collections. Additionally, SX Works, SoundExchange’s global publishing administration and licensing service arm, will offer registration, claiming and data mining of The MLC data sets to IMPEL members.

Songwriter Brandyn Burnette is the latest songwriter to join the Position Music roster. A veteran pop collaborator, Burnette already has cuts with Sueco, Bryce Vine, Backstreet Boys, Keith Urban, DVBBS, Afrojack, Jesse McCartney and more, and a successful artist project on his own and plans to continue to expand his success during the course of his Position Music deal. Burnette says of the deal that “Position really feels like a family that’s focused on creating a positive environment for their songwriters, producers & artists. It’s the perfect fit for a passionate and prolific writer like myself.”

Toronto-based Daytripper Music Publishing will host a showcase of its roster of songwriters at Hamburg, Germany’s Reeperbahn Festival on Sept. 24, starting at 1 PM in honor of its first anniversary. The showcase includes Daniel Blake, Nuela Charles, Geaturette, Tribe Friday, and POESY.

In Nashville, Concord signed a publishing deal with songwriter Abram Dean, who has had songs recorded by MaRynn Taylor and Dylan Marlowe … and MV2 Entertainment inked a publishing deal with songwriter-producer Grant Vogel, who has landed songs with Brett Young and David Nail.
