“Lao’ a Lao’” surges 11-1 in its second week after its first full tracking week. The bachata tune with pop nuances was released Aug. 12 on Sony Music Latin and debuted at No. 11 (chart dated Aug. 21) with only four days of airplay. It pushes up Tropical Airplay with a 448% gain in audience impressions, to 5.1 million, earned in the week ending August 22, according to MRC Data.
“Every time one of my songs gets to No. 1, the overwhelming feeling is gratefulness,” Royce tells Billboard. “I’m so thankful for the support I have received with my music throughout the years and for this 21st Tropical Airplay No. 1.”
Royce powers to his 21st No. 1 on the 27-year chart, and extends his third-most career leaders, standing behind only Marc Anthony (34) and Victor Manuelle (29). It follows the six-week No. 1 “Si Supieras,” his first win of 2021, which ranks at No. 4 on the current tally.
“I like to switch things up, and I’ve always been into fusions, so after releasing a few bachata songs with a more traditional sound, I wanted to create something different, fresher. And that’s what we accomplished with this record,” Royce continues.
“Lao’ a Lao’” is the first single from Royce’s seventh studio album slated for 2022. It was co-produced alongside D’lesly “Dice” Lora, George Noriega, Miguel Muñoz y Giovanny Andrés Fernandez Manzu.
“’Lao’ a Lao’ is the result of my first-ever Zoom writing session,” Royce remembers. “To be honest, I hadn’t written in a while because of the pandemic, and at first, I wasn’t really into the virtual session concept; I didn’t know what to expect, but it was a great experience.”
Beyond his Tropical Airplay coronation, “Lao’ a Lao’” concurrently bows at No. 16 on the overall Latin Airplay list, Royce’s highest start since “Deja Vu” arrived at No. 15 in March 2017 (peaked at No. 3).
