Phil Collins‘ “In the Air Tonight” returns to the Billboard charts dated Aug. 22, sparked by a viral video in which twins react to hearing the 1981 classic for the first time.
“Air” rules the Rock Digital Song Sales chart with 15,000 downloads sold in the tracking week ending Aug. 13, up 1,252%, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It’s Collins’ first No. 1 on the list, which began in 2010.
The track also debuts at No. 3 on the all-format Digital Song Sales chart.
The song brings Collins his maiden appearance on the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs survey, where older songs are eligible to appear if in the top 25 in chart points and with a meaningful reason for their resurgences. The song debuts at No. 9, with its sales sum joined by 3.5 million U.S. streams in the tracking week ending Aug. 13, a boost of 29%.
A longtime rock and adult radio staple, the song also drew 3.3 million all-format airplay impressions in the week ending Aug. 16.
“Air,” which hit No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1981, returns to prominence following the premiere of a video on YouTube channel TwinsthenewTrend featuring 22-year-old twins Tim and Fred Williams. Posted July 27, the clip went viral over a week ago. It’s now up to 6.2 million global views.
