Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” rules the Billboard Hot 100 for a ninth week and reaches No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart at last. Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown each soar into the top 10.
As we do every Wednesday, let’s delve into the numbers behind the top 10 and more.
“Happy” continues its Hot 100 command powered by its lock atop the Radio Songs and Digital Songs charts. It tops Radio Songs for an eighth week, logging 203 million all-format audience impressions (down 7 percent), according to Nielsen BDS. As previously reported, by reaching No. 1 on Adult Contemporary this week, the track has now topped six single-format airplay charts.
“Happy” leads the Digital Songs chart for a 10th week, up by 7 percent to 274,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It becomes just the sixth song to spend at least 10 weeks at No. 1 on Digital Songs and ties for the second-longest reign. Flo Rida’s “Low,” featuring T-Pain, racked a record 13 weeks on top in 2007-08, while four other titles prior to “Happy” led for 10 frames each: Robin Thicke’s Williams-assisted “Blurred Lines,” also featuring T.I. (2013); Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” featuring Wanz (2013); and the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” and “Boom Boom Pow” (both in 2009).
Meanwhile, fueled in part by growth in worldwide fan-made videos utilizing its official audio, “Happy” finally reaches No. 1 on Streaming Songs, claiming the Hot 100’s top Streaming Gainer award. It jumps 4-1 with a 28 percent surge to 9.2 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. The song previously reached a high of No. 2 (March 22) and marks Williams’ first Streaming Songs No. 1 (dating to the chart’s January 2013 launch; his featured turns on “Blurred Lines” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” both resulted in No. 2 peaks). “Happy” holds” at No. 2 on the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (2.1 million U.S. streams, down 12 percent), which it led for two weeks.
With his ninth week at No. 1, Williams becomes just the sixth solo male artist to spend a cumulative six months atop the Hot 100. Now up to 26 total weeks, thanks to “Happy,” “Blurred Lines” (12 weeks at No. 1) and his first two toppers in featured roles, Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” (three, 2004) and Ludacris’ “Money Maker” (two, 2006), Williams joins Usher (47 weeks), Michael Jackson (37), Elton John (34), Paul McCartney (30; not including his 59 weeks at No. 1 with the Beatles) and T.I. (28). (Williams passes Eminem and Stevie Wonder, each with 25 career weeks at No. 1. Mariah Carey leads all acts with 79 total No. 1 frames.)

“Happy” spends an 11th week at No. 1 on the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
“Happy” again ranks ahead of John Legend’s “All of Me” on the Hot 100, as the latter posts a fifth week at its No. 2 peak. And, thanks to its spike in streaming, “Happy” widens its lead, gaining by 7 percent in overall chart points while “Me” increases by 3 percent. “Happy,” thus, tops the Hot 100 with 16 percent more points than “Me” after it led by 12 percent last week.
“Me” leads On-Demand Songs for a third week (2.4 million, down 12 percent); tallies a seventh week at its No. 2 peak on Digital Songs (214,000, up 9 percent); posts a fourth week at its No. 2 highpoint on Radio Songs (195 million, up 7 percent); and slips to No. 3 from its No. 2 peak on Streaming Songs (7.7 million, down 4 percent).
After a record three weeks of no movement in the Hot 100’s top seven, a shakeup infuses the region at last, led by a 4-3 rebound for Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty,” featuring 2 Chainz. The song returns to its Hot 100 peak as its parent album of the same name becomes Derulo’s first top 10 on the Billboard 200, where it starts at No. 4.
Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” featuring Juicy J, drops 3-4 on the Hot 100, having led for four weeks before “Happy” began its rule. “Horse” paces 1-4 on Streaming Songs (likewise giving way to “Happy”) after nine weeks at No. 1, decreasing by 8 percent to 7.5 million.
As the soundtrack to Disney’s “Frozen” adds an 11th week atop the Billboard 200 (passing fellow Disney hit “The Lion King” for the longest reign ever for a soundtrack to an animated film), the album’s “Let It Go” by Idina Menzel holds at its No. 5 Hot 100 peak. It returns to No. 2 (3-2), its best rank, on Streaming Songs (7.5 million, up 2 percent).
Bastille’s “Pompeii” remains at No. 6 on the Hot 100 (and tops Hot Rock Songs for a 10th week). It peaked at No. 5 for three weeks last month.
DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” slithers to a new Hot 100 peak (8-7). It reaches the Digital Songs top five (8-5; 120,000, up 26 percent); bullets again at No. 7 on Streaming Songs (4.5 million, up 9 percent); and roars 38-23 on Radio Songs (44 million, up 28 percent). “Turn” tops the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a fourth week.
At No. 8 on the Hot 100, Justin Timberlake freshens the top 10, as “Not a Bad Thing” leaps from No. 12. The track pushes 9-8 on Radio Songs (79 million, up 15 percent); stays at No. 11 on Digital Songs (88,000, up 16 percent); and jumps 47-37 on Streaming Songs (1.9 million, up 11 percent).
Timberlake tallies his 15th Hot 100 top 10, to go along with six he notched in 1999-2002 as part of ‘N Sync. “Thing” also marks his first Hot 100 top 10 from “The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2).” The set’s first two singles, “Take Back the Night” and “TKO,” peaked at Nos. 29 and 36, respectively. RCA Records sources say that they always believed that “Thing” could be the album’s biggest hit but wanted to release “Take” and “TKO” first since they better represent the album’s R&B lean. The label also wanted to space out “Thing” and the fellow pure-pop “Mirrors,” which reached No. 2 last June. (“Mirrors” became the second top 10, following the No. 3-peaking “Suit & Tie,” from the first “20/20” album. Both releases debuted atop the Billboard 200.)
Chris Brown also helps make over the Hot 100’s top 10, climbing 11-9 with “Loyal,” billed as featuring Lil Wayne and French Montana or Too $hort or Tyga. (Why the quirky artist listing? “Loyal” was first released in two versions, the East Coast mix featuring French Montana and the West Coast edit featuring Too $hort. When its video was released on March 24, Tyga was featured in the third verse, instead of either French Montana or Too $hort. All three versions feature Lil Wayne and are available digitally and on streaming services.) The cut keeps at No. 6 on Streaming Songs (5.1 million, up 3 percent); pushes 19-13 on Radio Songs (51 million, up 6 percent); and holds at No. 24 on Digital Songs (56,000, up 18 percent).
Brown scores his 13th Hot 100 top and Lil Wayne, his 19th; among rappers, only Jay Z (21) boasts more top 10s than Lil Wayne, who passes Ludacris (18) in the category. Tyga catches his second Hot 100 top 10, while French Montana earns his first, as does rap vet Too $hort.
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Lorde’s No. 6-peaking “Team” tumbles 7-10.
