‘Hey, Pandora!’: Voice Mode Now Available to All Users

Users can follow the wake phrase "Hey, Pandora" with a wide range of voice commands, from "play something for my workout" to "add this to my party playlist."

Look Pandora, no hands. Starting today (July 23) all Pandora users now have access to the app’s personalized smart voice assistant, simply by saying “Hey, Pandora.”

The new, hands-free Voice Mode feature was first announced back in January, as a way to allow listeners to enjoy the app seamlessly while driving, cooking, working out or entertaining friends.

“With Voice Mode, we are introducing an even more natural and conversational way for listeners to discover new music and enhance their experience directly in the Pandora mobile app,” Pandora chief product officer Chris Phillips said in a statement at the time, “like getting recommendations from a friend who really knows you.”

Now, the feature is available to all mobile app users on iOS and Android across all tiers of service. To activate Voice Mode, users just tap the microphone icon at the upper-right of the app’s screen. Then, users can follow the wake phrase “Hey, Pandora” with a wide range of conversational voice commands, from “play something for my workout” to “add this to my party playlist.”

You can also change stations, control volume, skip or pause music, and more.

Voice Mode’s predictive understanding of listener preferences is powered by Pandora’s Music Genome Project data set, along with an expert in-house curation team and personalized machine learning search algorithms. It joins a crowded field of voice assistants now available today, from Apple’s Siri to Google Voice and Amazon Alexa.
