O.T. Genasis, Frank Ocean, One Direction: Digital and Social Movers
O.T. Genasis' subtle ode to cocaine cracks the Streaming Songs chart.

O.T. Genasis has a viral hit on his hands with his track “CoCo,” where the Long Beach, California-based hip-hop artist not-so-subtly raps about his love for cocaine. Many users on social sites like YouTube and Vine have used the song as the backing track in their homemade videos, causing the cut to debut at No. 21 on Streaming Songs with a 124 percent increase in streams (week ending Nov. 30), according to Nielsen Music.
Of the track’s 5.2 million streams, 90 percent came from YouTube (non-Vevo) both from “CoCo’s” official music video and user-generated videos (including re-posts of popular Vines) that feature the song.
Recently, O.T. Genasis was featured on Busta Rhymes‘ mixtape Catastrophic 2. Genasis’ first album is scheduled to be released in 2015.
1D’s ‘Night’ Moves: A few steps below Genasis, One Direction’s “Night Changes” skyrockets on the Streaming Songs tally, moving 50-25 after its parent album, Four, was added to Spotify in the week following its No. 1 Billboard 200 debut. “Night Changes” was streamed on Spotify just over one million times during the charting week, causing the title’s overall volume to increase by 76 percent over the previous frame to 4.8 million U.S. streams.
Ocean’s ‘Memrise’ Makes Waves: It’s been nearly two-and-a-half years since Frank Ocean released his first album, Channel Orange, but over the Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 28), fans got a taste the artist’s new music. The performer released a snippet of “Memrise,” a new track from his yet-to-be-named forthcoming album. Ocean posted the snippet to his Tumblr page, receiving more than 49,000 notes through Dec. 3 (according to Next Big Sound) and creating sizable buzz on Twitter with more than 26,000 mentions of the artist (according to Topsy Analytics).
The surge in activity causes “Memrise” to debut on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart at No. 9, the second-highest debut for the week behind Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” (No. 7). On the Social 50, by adding 800,000 new fans across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, Grande retains her No. 1 position for a second consecutive week.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.
Trainor’s Social Arrival: And lastly, weeks after scoring a smash No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit with “All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor finally makes her Social 50 debut at No. 33. The bow comes after a full week of online activity following the Nov. 19 debut of her official video for “Lips Are Movin,” the follow-up to “Bass.” She debuts with a 67 percent rise in chart points over the previous week.
Recapping the rest of the Social 50 top 10, Justin Bieber ascends (4-2) along with Taylor Swift (6-3), and Selena Gomez (7-4). Miley Cyrus descends (3-5) while Rihanna jumps into the top 10 (15-6). One Direction dips (2-7), along with Beyonce (5-8), as Snoop Dogg (13-9) and Demi Lovato rise (11-10).
