Oscars Shine With Big Streaming Gains, Led by Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’
The 2020 Academy Awards spurred a 68% streaming gain for the songs performed on the show, including a big 217% increase for Eminem's "Lose Yourself."
In the wake of Eminem’s performance of “Lose Yourself” on the Academy Awards (Feb. 9), on-demand streams of the song surged 217% in the U.S. according to initial reports to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The track collected 4.74 million on-demand streams (audio and video combined) on Feb. 9 and 10, versus the 1.49 million it garnered on the two days before the show, Feb. 7 and 8.
Overall, Eminem’s entire catalog of songs notched a 19% increase in streams – rising to 15.77 million on Feb. 9 and 10, versus 13.3 million on Feb. 7 and 8.
Best Original Song Streams: Meanwhile, all five of the nominees for best original song (“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” “I’m Standing With You,” “Into the Unknown,” “Love Me Again” and “Stand Up”) snared 4.29 million on-demand streams on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 – up 21% as compared to the 3.56 million they earned on Feb. 7 and 8.
All five songs were also performed during the live ABC TV broadcast. Of the five nominated tunes, the one that tallied the most on-demand streams in the wake of the Oscars was Idina Menzel and AURORA’s “Into the Unknown,” from Frozen II, with 3.78 million streams – up 13% versus the 3.35 million it earned on Feb. 7 and 8. The nominee with the second-most streams post-show was Cynthia Erivo’s “Stand Up,” with 197,000 – up 176% versus 71,000.
The nominated song with the largest percentage gain in streams, however, was Chrissy Metz’s “I’m Standing With You,” which vaulted 376% to 66,000 streams on Feb. 9 and 10, as compared to the 18,000 earned on Feb. 7 and 8.
The track that won the Oscar for best original song, Elton John’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” rose 172% in streams to 138,000 (up from 51,000).
And There’s More! In addition to “Lose Yourself” and the five best original song nominees, a few other songs were performed on the Oscars.
Billie Eilish and Finneas performed The Beatles’ “Yesterday” during the In Memoriam tribute segment. Janelle Monae and Billy Porter opened the show with a medley that included Monae’s “Come Alive (The War of the Roses),” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” (from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) and John’s “I’m Still Standing.”
In total, those songs were streamed 914,000 times on Feb. 9 and 10 – up 5% as compared to the 872,000 streams they tallied on Feb. 7 and 8.
Overall, the songs mentioned above (“Lose Yourself,” the five best original song nominees, and the tunes by Monae and others) were streamed 9.95 million times on Feb. 9 and 10 – up 68% versus 5.92 million on Feb. 7 and 8. (Notably, “Lose Yourself” accounted for nearly half — 48% — of the streaming activity on Feb. 9 and 10.)
