It’ll take something special to deny One Direction another No. 1 when the new Official U.K. Singles Chart is published. The British and Irish boyband’s latest single “Drag Me Down” is hurtling toward the top spot, according to mid-week data, with the track generating twice the combined sales of the second-best seller, Little Mix’s smash “Black Magic”.
Both recordings are released in the U.K. through Syco Music.
It was clear in the hours after “Drag Me Down” dropped that the song had “hit” written all over it. The group’s first Zayn Malik-less song set a new Spotify record for one-day streams when it was played 4.75 million times global on its release date, Friday July 31, breaking a previous record set by Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” (4.26 million streams on April 17).
”Drag Me Down” — written by Jamie Scott, John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, and produced by Ryan and Bunetta — jumped to the top of the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 shortly after its surprise release. That night, the foursome performed the song live for the first time, in Indianapolis. It’s the first track lifted from the band’s fifth album, which is due in November.
The U.K.’s singles chart is based on sales of downloads, CDs, vinyl and audio streams and is compiled by the Official Charts Company. The new list is published Friday.
