One Direction Sizzles Atop Latest Hot Tours Tally

One Direction makes a fifth appearance at No. 1 on the weekly roundup of Hot Tours (see list, below) since beginning its On the Road Again stadium tour. The Hot Tours ranking lists the week’s ten highest grossing tours reported to Billboard.

The On the Road Again show’s grosses total $80.6 million from the group’s summer trek through North America, reported during the past week, along with the first stop on the group’s eight-city fall tour through the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The tour’s summer leg through the U.S. and Canada kicked off on July 9 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, the first of 22 stadiums — along with one arena — booked in North America for the pop group. Wrapping in the Boston area on Sept. 12, the summertime trek added $72 million to the tour’s overall gross that now reaches $188 million after jaunts through five continents since the Feb. 7 launch. 2.1 million tickets have been sold for the tour’s 61 performances reported to Billboard Boxscore.

One Direction is currently on tour in Europe through the end of this month with shows booked in seven more cities following its sold-out engagement at London’s O2 arena in September. The six-show stint grossed $8.3 million from 90,696 sold seats to kick off the tour’s last leg. The final concert is planned for Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on Oct. 31.

Following in the second slot on the Hot Tours roundup is veteran rock group Rush with $32.3 million in sold ticket revenue from its R40 Live tour. The tour played 30 cities during the summer run that spanned 13 weeks from May 2 until Aug. 1. With 27 arenas on the schedule, along with a handful of outdoor sheds, the tour logged an overall sold ticket count of 379,800. The top-performing venues were Madison Square Garden in New York with a top gross of $1.5 million from a June 29 sellout, and the largest crowd came from the Washington, D.C. market with 16,579 present on May 30 at Jiffy Lube Live, one of the three amphitheater dates during the run.

Next, at No. 3 in the ranking, is 5 Seconds of Summer, based on $24.7 million in sales reported from 41 performances on the Australian pop rock band’s Rock Out with Your Socks Out tour. Grosses in this tally come from the final two legs of the tour: a six-city stint during June in Australia and New Zealand followed by the tour’s final leg, a two-month trek through North America.

In its entirety, the 19-week world tour — the band’s first effort as a major tour headliner — racked up a total gross of $37.4 million from 69 concerts with 782,982 fans in attendance.
