Old Dominion collects its fourth No. 1 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart, and third consecutively, as “Written in the Sand” ascends 3-1 (on the list dated Feb. 17), up 11 percent to 40.9 million impressions, according to Nielsen Music.
“Sand” is the second single from the band’s sophomore full-length, Happy Endings, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart dated Sept. 16, 2017. “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” led Country Airplay the week before.
“When we chose ‘Written in the Sand,’ as a single, it felt like a risk,” says lead singer and “Sand” co-writer Matthew Ramsey. “It’s a different sound, a different mood and a different story than anything we’ve ever released. But, it’s a story we felt we could deliver. As a band, and as songwriters, we write songs that we hope, in the end, connect with people. We love the fact that this song has done just that.”
Old Dominion’s other Country Airplay No. 1s are “Song for Another Time” (Dec. 24, 2016) and “Break Up With Him” (which led for two weeks beginning Nov. 14, 2015). Its other top 10, “Snapback,” reached No. 2 (June 4, 2016).
HE ‘BROKE’ THROUGH: On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, Walker Hayes achieves his first top 10, as his third chart entry, “You Broke Up With Me,” pushes 12-9 in its 37th week. He completes the longest rise to the top 10 for an act’s first top 10 since Dylan Scott’s “My Girl” reached the region in its 44th frame on June 24, 2017, before climbing to No. 3.
