The Offspring Back at No. 1 on Mainstream Rock Chart After a Record 18 Years
The group ends the longest gap between leaders, a mark previously held by Stone Temple Pilots.
The Offspring lands its second No. 1 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs radio airplay chart, and first leader on the list in nearly 18 years, as “Coming for You” lifts 2-1. The metal-tinged, alt-punk band breaks the mark for the longest wait between No. 1s on the tally, which launched in 1981.
The Offspring first led the list on May 10, 1997 with “Gone Away.” Before its new leader, it came close to reigning, charting 19 entries, including 10 top 10s.
The gap of almost 18 years is the longest between an act topping Mainstream Rock Songs, besting Stone Temple Pilots, which paused 16 years between “Lady Picture Show” (Jan. 18, 1997) and “Out of Time” (Aug. 17, 2013).
It’s unconfirmed if “Coming for You” precedes a 10th studio album from The Offspring, dating to its 1989 self-titled debut. Its new leader marks the band’s first new material since its ninth album, Days Gone, in 2012).
