For the fifth time in six years Universal Music superstar Helene Fischer is the No. 1 album artist on the Official German Charts, as compiled by GfK Entertainment on behalf of Germany’s music industry.
Thanks to Fischer, Bonez MC & RAF Camora and Gzuz, Universal artists occupy all three of the top spots of the annual album charts.
Fischer had the year’s most successful album with her 2017 self-titled effort, which — you guessed it — topped the annual album charts last year as well. The dance-hit “In My Mind” by Dynoro (Lithuania) and Gigi D’agostino (Italy) was winner of the single charts.
Numbers two and three of the annual singles charts went to Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” (Atlantic/Warner Music) and Bausa’s “Was Du Liebe nennst” (Downbeat Records/Warner Music), the latter being the highest charting single from a domestic act. Both acts had additional tracks in the top 20: “River” (Interscope/Universal) by Eminem feat. Ed Sheeran hit No. 17 and “Casanova” (Banger Music/Groove Attack) by Summer Cem & Bausa at 18. El Professor had the official summer hit with “Bella C”ao” (Kontor) landed at No. 6 behind Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss” (Columbia/Sony Music) and Dennis Lloyd’s “Nevermind” (Warner Music).
Also notable is the high percentage of German-language hip-hop in the charts. About one fifth of the 100 most successful singles in 2018 were by German rappers. BVMI chairman and CEO Florian Drücke called the Official German Charts the “main currency” of the country’s music industry.
For the first time GfK presented to Fischer the annual “Number 1 Award of the Official German Charts” trophy.
“I have huge respect for Helene and her creative vision and enthusiasm. She continually pushes herself to the limit and beyond and millions of fans love her for that,” commented Frank Briegmann, UMG’s president and CEO of Central Europe and Deutsche Grammophon. “She has become one of the biggest and most successful German stars of all time. The title ‘Album of the Year’ is particularly significant, because it is a direct compliment from her fans. I congratulate Helene, her team and everyone involved on this amazing success! Most notably, Fischer makes it to the top of the annual charts with the same album for the second year running.”
Tom Bohne of Universal Music Germany added: “It looks like Helene Fischer can achieve anything. Incredibly happy fans, mega shows on a truly international level, and now, for the fifth time in six years, the title Album of the Year. She is a source of inspiration for everyone that works with her, because she keeps setting new artistic standards. Her most notable quality, however, is, that despite her many talents, her brilliance and her success, she is still very grounded and has lost none of her humanity and friendliness towards her fellow human beings.”
Bernd Dopp, CEO & chairman Warner Music Central Europe said in Hamburg today: “We’re proud of a great result for the sixth consecutive year while having transformed the company simultaneously. We remain ahead of the curve by embracing our innovation leadership. One of our exceptional performing artists is Bausa who delivered the most successful domestic single of the year with ‘Was Du Liebe nennst’ counting more than 140 million streams. He is the first German rapper achieving diamond status. We’re proud of the success of all our artists in 2018.”
