Apple may be moving away from using magnetic snaps for its MacBook power connectors, but that same concept will live on in your headphones with Magzet, a startup that has developed audio jacks that promise to put an end to the painful practice of yanked-on device cables. The Magzet is a two-part audio connector with the small MagJack plugging into any device’s 3.5mm jack and the larger MagKap fitting snuggly over a headphone plug. The magnetic technology pulls them together and… that’s it. If something pulls on the chord, it will simply un-snap.
Creators Jon Hallsten and Jeff Russell explain the benefits of a magnetic connection in a new Kickstarter campaign, saying it “protects your ears, headphones, accessories, or even worse, your device from being catapulted into hard surfaces with very expensive and inconvenient consequences.” The Magzet works with Apple and Android models and according to Hallsten and Russell, “the audio quality is superb.”
The funding campaign, launched this week, aims to raise $294,000 in order to manufacture the device, which its inventors say will be both smaller and affordable. Watch a demo on how it works:
