Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s former Billboard Hot 100 hit “Summer Wine” debuts at No. 1 on Billboard & Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for May, after its appearance in H&M’s “The Summer Shop 2017” ad.
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 or top 10 on a genre chart.
“Summer Wine,” which reached No. 49 on the Hot 100 chart (dated April 8, 1967), was the first of four collaborations between Sinatra and Hazlewood that would land on the Hot 100. The duo’s highest-charting song, “Jackson,” peaked at No. 14 three months after “Summer Wine” in July.
With the song’s arrival on Top TV Commercials, it is also Hazlewood’s first Billboard chart entry since 1968 and Sinatra’s first since 1982.
The track leads all songs with 27,000 Shazam tags, 2,000 downloads sold and 162,000 U.S. streams in the month of May, according to Nielsen Music.
Return of the Mark: Mark Morrison’s 1997 No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Return of the Mack” debuts at No. 5 on the Top TV Commercials chart after being featured in Burger King’s “Return of the Mac N’ Cheetos” ad. Thanks to its appearance, the song earned 12,000 monthly Shazam tags, 23,000 downloads sold and 4.7 million U.S. streams in May.
The commercial features clips from the original “Return of the Mack” music video, but with the Burger King mascot’s head superimposed on Morrison.
Elsewhere, late Nigerian funk pioneer William Onyeabor debuts at No. 8 with “Fantastic Man” after its appearance in Apple’s “Barbers” commercial. The song earns its debut after logging 14,000 Shazam tags, 2,000 downloads sold and 184,000 U.S. streams in the month, according to Nielsen Music.
“Fantastic Man” was featured on Onyeabor’s fourth studio album Tomorrow in 1979. Onyeabor died on Jan. 16 at age 70.
