Mykki Blanco Signs to Transgressive Records: Exclusive

Mykki Blanco has signed to London-based label Transgressive Records, Billboard can reveal.

Mykki Blanco, one of the most original, unpredictable artistic voices to emerge over the last decade, has a new label to call home; Blanco has signed to London-based label Transgressive Records, Billboard can reveal.

“We have been huge fans of Mykki Blanco since we first saw them slay our sister Visions Festival several years ago in London,” says Transgressive co-founder Toby L of the new signee. “Fiercely defiant and effortlessly genre-less, it is an absolute honor to welcome them to the Transgressive roster. We have so much incredible music set to drop in the next 12 months across several very important projects. An icon and an unmistakable charisma, making some of the most vital music we’ve heard in years: prepare to be utterly enchanted.”

With the news of Blanco’s signing also comes the first bit of new music from the rapper/performance artist’s next creative phase: “Free Ride,” a genre-resistant mixture of trap beats, indie vibes and retro soul flourishes steered by Mykki’s assertive flow. “Free Ride” is co-produced by FaltyDL (whose ongoing creative partnership with Blanco began in 2018 and will continue through upcoming releases) and Hudson Mohawke. Annie Mac premiered the song Tuesday (March 16) on BBC Radio 1.

“Some of the most intimate moments and conversations I have ever shared were with my mother on long drives in the Southern countryside when I was a teenager,” says Mykki of the song. “The music that soundtracked these memories on our daily journey’s was the stuff of my mother’s generation. I would find myself daydreaming, reflecting and envisioning the kind of life I would like to create for myself. These memories and the music of Luther Vandross were the first inspirations behind the creation of my new song ‘Free Ride.'”
