Here’s How the Music Community Can Get Free Coronavirus-Related Legal Services

The music community can receive free legal services from three arts non-profits to solve coronavirus-related issues.

As the music community continues to wrap its head around the complexities the CARES Act and other financial relief programs responding to the coronavirus pandemic, dozens of entertainment attorneys are volunteering their time and expertise to provide free legal services to help industry professionals figure out the resources available to them.

Three non-profits — New York’s Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), California Lawyers for the Arts and Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Artists of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville — will be on the frontlines to provide assistance on the bigger issues, but also on such matters as contract disputes over performance cancellations, insurance issues, freelancer’s unemployment assistance, labor and employment questions, and small business relief. Anyone involved in the music industry can ask for assistance.

The plan came out of discussions the general counsels for the three major record groups — Sony Music’s Julie Swidler, Universal Music Group’s Jeffrey Harleston and Warner Music Group’s Paul Robinson — were having with attorneys at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison about how to best help those in the music community struggling to navigate through confusing paperwork and understand their rights during these difficult times.

Paul, Weiss partner Jay Cohen is VLA’s chairman of the board and suggested the non-profit’s participation since it already has 50 law firms as members. Legal non-profits in Los Angeles and Nashville were added to expand the outreach.

Program users can contact the non-profit in the city where they live (the organizations will also try to provide assistance to those in other cities). If the non-profits can’t help, they will turn to their network of pro-bono attorneys to take on the case.
