Grammys 2015: Most Shazamed Moments Belong to ELO, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran

You heard it right: an Electric Light Orchestra song was the most Shazamed moment of the Grammy Awards.

More than a decade after Electric Light Orchestra‘s “Mr. Blue Sky” found new earholes to delight in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the epic song is back again after ELO’s Jeff Lynne and Ed Sheeran performed it during the Grammy Awards. According to data provided by music discovery app Shazam, the 1978 song, which reached No. 35 on the Hot 100, provided the most Shazamed moment of the entire telecast.

The song’s performance on Shazam may have had something to do with young Sheeran — ELO’s disco-y “Evil Woman” did not make the top 10 — but fans of the beloved band will take it. All in all, there were 23 performances during the lengthy telecast (we rank them here), and the second-most Shazamed moment belonged to Katy Perry‘s glowing performance of “By the Grace of God.” Sheeran and (his best-friend’s ex-boyfriend) John Mayer were third with “Thinking Out Loud.”

Other top-Shazamed performances include Hozier‘s “Take Me to Church,” Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani‘s duet on “My Heart Is Open,” and AC/DC‘s “Highway to Hell.” Paul McCartney made a couple appearances in the top 10, first with Rihanna and Kanye West, on “FourFiveSeconds,” and again with West on his track “Only One.”

One of the music biz’s favorite things about Shazam is that after finding out the identity of a song, you can click to buy it. The top songs that Grammys viewers made that initial leap to buy were Sheeran’s “Loud,” Hozier’s “Church” and Maroon 5‘s “Heart,” featuring Stefani. Viewers watching 56-year-old Madonna velour it out on “Living for Love,” off upcoming album Rebel Heart, also made that first step to buy. (Shazam says these “clicks to buy” do not represent actual purchases.)

The 57th Grammy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles. Sam Smith was the big winner with four trophies, including best new artist and song of the year. Aside from all the performances, viewers got another jolt when Beck upset Beyonce (and Kanye) by winning album of the year, for Morning Phase.
