Just as he was set to kick off his first Canadian tour in 15 years, Morrissey issued a plea to winter outerwear manufacturer Canada Goose to stop using fur and down feathers in its parkas on Thursday (April 11). Now, he’s postponed most of his Canadian dates due to a “medical emergency.”
The tour was supposed to have kicked off Sunday night (April 14) in Vancouver. The staunch animal rights activist and vegan boycotted Canada until now because of seal hunting, and had planned to donate a portion of proceeds from all of the tour’s ticket sales to 15 animal rescue organizations.
“Due to a medical emergency stemming from an accident incurred while traveling in Europe, Morrissey will be forced to postpone his performances in Vancouver to October 14th and 15th, 2019,” read a statement issued by Ticketmaster on Saturday (April 13).
“Spirits are high and the artist is on the path to a swift recovery. All tickets will be valid for the new date and exchanges will not be necessary. Thank you for your understanding. Morrissey looks forward to making his long-awaited return to the city and wishes to deeply thank everyone for their patience. All remaining dates on Morrissey’s tour will resume as planned, commencing in Toronto on Friday Apr 26.”
Those remaining dates — in Calgary (April 17), Edmonton (April 18), Saskatoon (April 20) and Winnipeg (April 22) — were also postponed shortly following that announcement. According to Morrissey’s Facebook page, the Edmonton date will now be Oct. 10. A pair of Toronto shows (April 26 and April 27) at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts and one in Montreal on the April 29 at April MTELUS remain on the schedule.
Morrissey is slated to make his Broadway debut in May at Lunt-Fontanne Theater, May 2-4, and 8-11, ahead of his new album, California Son, which drops May 24.
In 2006, Morrissey released a statement boycotting Canada because of the “horrific slaughter” of seals.
In September of 2018, he released a more recent statement on Morrissey Central.
“My decision to return to Canada after almost 15 years of protest against its savage and Neanderthal annual Baby Seal Kill is entirely because my stance was ultimately of no use and helped no one,” he wrote. “My voice was drowned out by the merciless swing of spiked axes crushing the heads of babies.”
