Mason Watts is the second signing to Michael Chugg’s City Pop Records.
The promising 20-year-old Australian singer and songwriter joins TikTok star Mia Rodriguez at the record label, which sits in Chugg Music and is operated by Chugg, the legendary concert promoter, and his business partner Andrew Stone.
Chugg is confident the youngster has what it takes. Paying tribute to the singer’s talent and work ethic, Chugg describes Watts as “the kind of young artist who is tailor made for the new borderless, global music business we are in today.”
Watts is currently working on new music for City Pop Records, to be distributed by Believe.
Hailing from Toowoomba in southern Queensland, Watts’ self-released debut single “Recovery” was released in 2019 and has enjoyed more than 350,000 plays on Spotify. “Recovery” was co-produced by U.K.-based Edd Holloway, who is signed to BMG Publishing/Gravity Management and who recalls the song was “written and recorded very quickly and that was down to Mason’s writing ability and musicianship.”
Chugg Music, the independent management, record label, label services and publishing business, was launched in 2012 and has enjoyed success in Australia and abroad with a roster that includes Sheppard, Lime Cordiale, Casey Barnes and Avalanche City.
City Pop Records arrived in 2019 with Rodriguez its first artist signing. The Sydney-based youngster recently released her second single “Psycho.”
Australia’s pop artists “don’t have to come via ‘The Voice’ or ‘Neighbours’ or ‘Home and Away’ to have a career,” Stone, Head of Chugg Music, said at the launch of the label.
“And we don’t think the majors have a monopoly on the pop space in Australia. Let’s look at social media as a direct-to-fan marketing outlet, but apply what we would apply to a top-tier artist.”
