Country icon Mel Tillis passed away on Sunday (Nov. 19) at the Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida, after battling intestinal issues. He was 85.
Lonnie Melvin Tillis was born in Tampa, Florida, on Aug. 8, 1932. Tillis, who leaves behind six children, was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry by his daughter, country artist <a href=”/music/Pam-Tillis”>Pam Tillis</a>, in 2007. The same year, he was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In February 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts.
Tillis’ success on the Billboard charts included his own hits, including six Hot Country Songs No. 1s among 36 top 10s. He also wrote hits that were recorded by other artists, including Kenny Rogers & The First Edition‘s “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and <a href=”/music/Ricky-Skaggs”>Ricky Skaggs</a>’ “Honey (Open That Door),” which topped the country tally dated June 2, 1984.
