While there’s been much talk about the demise of romance and balladry in Latin music, two romantic powerhouses, representing two generations of artists, will come together in a major U.S. tour this summer.
Mexican singer/songwriter Marco Antonio Solís, a veteran hit-maker who is one of Latin music’s top-selling stars of all time, will pair up with Mexican group Camila for the La Experiencia (The Experience) tour.
At a press conference announcing the tour on Monday, May 18, Solís said, “It’s really important to get our kind of music out there again for those die-hard romantics in the U.S. and this will be an unforgettable experience for them.”
Mario Domm of Camila echoed Solís’ enthusiasm, saying, “The idea for the tour was born out of a genuine friendship. We’ve sang with friends before but we’ve never shared an entire tour and we love the concept of doing it with someone that we admire so much, especially as a songwriter. You can have a hit song out of luck, maybe even two. But to have the type of career that Marco has, it’s a calling. I know how many years he’s put into this. He’s the example you want to follow when you do this for a living.”
The tour kicks off June 19 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca., and will play in 12 arenas (with the possibility of more dates to be added), including New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Toyota Center in Houston. Talk of a joint tour has been going on for months, since Camila performed “La Vida Entera” (The Whole Life) with Solís at Premios Lo Nuestro earlier this year and released the single in April.

The tour, which is being billed as a three-hour concert experience, will bring together two generations of romantic music in one of the most interesting stage pairings to be presented in recent memory.
“The idea of reaching a younger generation is really exciting to me,” said Solís. “This trend that we’re seeing of artists pairing up for tours also has to do with the state of the music industry today. There are fewer spaces for concerts, so you’re seeing more people pair up. Ultimately, I think audiences deserve this kind of experience. You get to see two shows on one stage, with different songs, different sensibilities, but at the same time it’s all part of the same, fresh energy. You have the youthful romanticism of Camila and my own classic songs, which will be given a different take on this tour.”
While Solís and Camila are both romantic acts from Mexico, their style and sound is very different. Camila’s pop music veers often into pop/rock territory and their vocals are infused with R&B sensibilities. Solís is a more traditional act but one that has managed to remain timeless; his songs remain among the most covered of any Latin songwriter, and his albums and singles continue to top the charts on a steady basis.
Ultimately, Solís says he hopes the tour will carry a deeper message. “We live in a very confused world, where bad things happen all the time, and music helps to heal the soul and body.”
Domm reminisced on the first concert that impacted him in a big way. “Concerts have the power to change lives,” he said. “I’ll never forget seeing Maná for the first time and how it made me feel. I stood right next to these massive speakers and everything was shaking. The sound of the drums thrilled me. I knew I wanted to be a musician after that.”
