Maná Conquers Spain as Tour Opens
Band members could not confirm that Shakira, who joined Maná on the single "Mi Verdad," would appear at any of the concerts in Spain.
More than 20,000 people packed a stadium for the Mexican rock group Maná’s Spain tour opener in Tenerife on Aug. 21. Spanish press enthusiastically reviewed the “rejuvenated” form of the band members, the set-list — including Maná’s classics and songs from the group’s recent album Cama Incendiada — and the spectacular production with 320 lights, flames, and a stage shaped like a bed.
Following last weekend’s Tenerife date, the group will perform seven more dates in Spain, including two nights in Madrid. Maná’s recent album Cama Incendiada is currently number 5 after 17 weeks on Spain’s album chart, where it reached no. 1. Notably, the Mexican superstars are the only artists in the top Five who are not from Spain.
In an interview with the Spanish news agency EFE, band members could not confirm that Shakira, who joined Maná on the single “Mi Verdad,” would appear at any of the concerts in Spain. The Colombian star lives in Barcelona, where the group will perform on Sept. 6. They joked that if Shakira did not join them, one of the musicians would wear a wig during the song. At the Tenerife concert, Shakira appeared onscreen during the song.
Maná frontman Fher Olvera had incited a backlash among Latinos against Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant remarks when he criticized Trump onstage at a concert in Los Angeles in June. During the interview in Spain, Olvera and drummer Alex Gonzalez called Trump and Ricky Santorum’s anti-immigration platforms “ignorant.”
“They are making…a show of stupidity,” Olvera told EFE.
