Maluma Nabs Second No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs Chart With ‘Hawai’

Maluma secures his second No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart (dated Sept. 12) — and his first as a lead act —  as “Hawai” jumps 2-1. Maluma last reigned on Hot Latin Songs through his featured role on Shakira’s “Chantaje,” an 11-week ruler starting with the chart dated Nov. 10, 2016. “Hawai” becomes his first leader without an accompanied act.

“Hawai” was produced by Medellín duo The Rude Boyz, who also produced Papi Juancho, Maluma’s fifth studio album, which debuted at No. 2 on Top Latin Albums (Sept. 5-dated list).

The Hot Latin Songs chart blends airplay, digital sales and streaming data. “Hawai” advances to the top mainly on the strength of streaming activity. The song earned 9.4 million U.S. clicks (up 30 percent) in the week ending Sept. 3, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data; four days following his performance of the song at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 30.

The streaming surge concurrently places him at No. 40 on the overall Streaming Songs chart, his highest debut there with an all-Spanish tune.

Over on the Latin Streaming Songs chart, “Hawai” secures a second week at No. 1.  Maluma joins the only other act to top Hot Latin Songs in 2020 without an accompanied act: Bad Bunny achieved the feat when “Si Veo a Tu Mamá” reigned the March 14-dated list. Who did it before? Well Bad Bunny again, as “Vete” ruled for four consecutive weeks starting chart dated Dec. 28, 2019.

“Hawai” also sees progress on the overall Latin Airplay chart. It climbs 11-4 boosted by a 36 percent increase in audience impressions (to 8 million) earned in the week ending Sept. 6.

Elsewhere, “Hawai” earns Maluma his seventh leader on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart: the song jumps 3-1 in its sixth week.
