Luke Bryan’s ‘Beer’ Hops To No. 1 On Hot Country Songs

Radio gains help fuel the coronation, as while “Beer” caps Country Digital Songs for a fourth week with an 11% slide to 57,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, it increases by 12% to 37 million audience impressions, holding at No. 9 on the Nielsen BDS-fueled Country Airplay list. “Beer” dips 4-6 on Country Streaming Songs (626,000 U.S. streams, down 1%, according to BDS). The new leader marks a quick repeat atop Hot Country Songs for the Georgia native, where he most recently appeared with “That’s My Kind of Night,” which logged the last of 12 weeks at No. 1 the week of Nov. 16.
(The ascent of Bryan’s new topper also halts a dry spell atop Hot Country Songs for hits with the word beer in their titles. The last such leaders? Billy Currington’s “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer” in 2010; Kenny Chesney’s “Beer in Mexico” in 2007; and Toby Keith and Willie Nelson’s “Beer for My Horses” in 2003.)
EXTENDED ‘STAY’: Florida Georgia Line, meanwhile, logs a ninth week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with “Here’s to the Good Times” (17,000 sold). The pair achieves its longest No. 1 reign on the Nielsen BDS-based Country Airplay chart with “Stay,” which leads for a fourth straight week and surpasses “Cruise,” the duo’s breakthrough single, which spent three weeks at the summit in December 2012. Second and third radio singles “Get Your Shine On” and “Round Here” both spent two weeks at No. 1 last year.
The fourth week on top for “Stay” marks the chart’s longest reign in two years, since Zac Brown Band completed a four-week command with “Keep Me in Mind” the week of Jan. 14, 2012. No song has topped Country Airplay for more than four weeks since Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” ruled for five frames in November/December 2009.
PERFECT 10s: Singer/songwriter Eric Paslay celebrates his first top 10 on Hot Country Songs, as “Friday Night” improves 12-10. His previous best rank was No. 48 with “Never Really Wanted” three years ago. Paslay co-wrote “Friday,” as well as Rascal Flatts’ “Rewind,” which debuts at No. 41. The trio’s new song previews its upcoming ninth studio set and debuts at No. 28 on Country Airplay. Expect a solid jump on Hot Country Songs next week, elevated by sales of the track’s first retail frame; its digital download was released on Tuesday (Jan. 14).
The Band Perry scores its seventh consecutive top 10 radio-promoted single on Hot Country Songs, as “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” lifts 11-9. The streak includes every proper single release after the sibling trio’s debut single “Hip to My Heart” peaked at No. 20 in May 2010.
‘PRETTY’ GOOD: Actress/singer Lucy Hale (“Pretty Little Liars,” “A Cinderella Story”) snares the Hot Shot Debut at No. 21 on Hot Country Songs with “You Sound Good to Me.” The bow marks the best opening-week rank for a solo female since season-four champion of NBC’s “The Voice” Danielle Bradbery began at No. 16 in August with “The Heart of Dixie”; “Dixie” bullets at No. 22 this week. Hale’s song starts at No. 4 on Country Digital Songs (42,000).
Hale, a native of Memphis, will release her debut album later this year, set to be produced by Mark Bright.
‘BABY’ MONITOR: Jason Aldean collects his 18th top 10 on Country Airplay with “When She Says Baby” (12-10). He’d last appeared in the upper region with “Night Train,” which rolled to a two-week reign in October.
Remarkably, all but two of Aldean’s 20 radio-promoted singles have reached the top 10, with 10 having risen all the way to No. 1.
