Luke Bryan’s ‘One Margarita’ Tops Country Airplay: ‘It’s Going to Be Even More Fun at a Live Show’

The song completes the quickest trip to No. 1 this year.

Luke Bryan banks his 23rd No. 1 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart, as “One Margarita” rises 2-1 on the July 11-dated list. The song gained by 13% to 32.8 million audience impressions in the week ending July 5, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

The track, written by Michael Carter, Matt Dragstrem and Josh Thompson, reaches No. 1 in its 15th week on Country Airplay, wrapping the fastest trip to the top this year.

It completes the quickest coronation since Luke Combs’ “Even Though I’m Leaving” also reached the summit in its 15th frame in November 2019.


“When I first heard ‘One Margarita,’ I really thought it was the perfect summer song,” Bryan tells Billboard. “It has all the elements of catchy, fun and such an easy sing-along. During these challenging times, it’s a song that people can just dance and let go to. It’s been fun watching my fans react on socials, and it’s gonna be even more fun when I get to see them react at a live show.”

“One Margarita” is the third single, and third Country Airplay leader, from Bryan’s seventh full-length, Born Here Live Here Die Here, due Aug. 7; it was originally scheduled for April 8, but he delayed both the album and his planned tour because of the COVID-19 crisis. The tour is now scheduled to launch in May 2021 in Youngstown, Ohio.

The set’s first single, “Knockin’ Boots,” ruled Country Airplay for two weeks last September. Follow-up “What She Wants Tonight” led for a week this April.

Bryan boasts the sixth-most Country Airplay No. 1s, dating to the chart’s 1990 start. Kenny Chesney leads with 31, followed by Tim McGraw (29), Blake Shelton (27) and Alan Jackson and George Strait, each with 26.

On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, “One Margarita” pushes 4-3. In the week ending July 2, it collected 8.9 million U.S. streams and sold 11,000, the latter sum good for the track’s sixth week atop Country Digital Song Sales.

‘BONES’ STILL BEST Maren Morris’ crossover smash “The Bones” tops Hot Country Songs for an 18th week. Morris’ first leader, which took over atop the March 14-dated tally, drew 45.9 million in all-format audience and 11 million streams and sold 5,000 in the tracking week.

The song led Country Airplay for two weeks in February, marking Morris’ fourth No. 1. It topped Adult Pop Songs for a week in April and reached No. 13 on Pop Songs in June. This week, it holds at its No. 4 high on Adult Contemporary.

“The Bones” ties Florida Georgia Line’s 2016 No. 1 “H.O.L.Y.” as the sixth-longest-running leader in the history of Hot Country Songs, which began as an all-encompassing genre chart in 1958. “The Bones” is now one frame behind Lee Roy Van Dyke’s “Walk on By,” which led for 19 weeks in 1961-62. FGL and Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to Be” holds the record with its 50-week domination in 2017-18.

NEW TOP 10s Maddie & Tae’s “Die From a Broken Heart” completes a record 50-week climb to the Hot Country Songs top 10, rising 11-8. It bests Lee Brice’s “Love Like Crazy” (2010) and Chris Lane’s “I Don’t Know About You” (2019), each of which took 46 weeks to the tier.

The duo’s third Hot Country Songs top 10 bumps 10-9 on Country Airplay (20.4 million, up 8%) and drew 7.2 million streams and sold 3,000 in the tracking week. The pair previously reached the region with “Fly,” which ascended to No. 9 in September 2015, and its debut hit “Girl in a Country Song,” which rose to No. 3 in December 2014 and led Country Airplay the same month.

Florida Georgia Line banks its 17th Hot Country Songs top 10, as “I Love My Country” rises 12-10. It pushes 14-11 on Country Airplay (19.6 million, up 7%), while having hauled in 6 million streams and sold 3,000 in the tracking week.

Plus, Justin Moore achieves his 11th Country Airplay top 10, as “Why We Drink” climbs 13-10 (19.8 million, up 8%).
