Luis Fonsi Earns First No. 1 Since 2009 on Hot Latin Songs Chart With ‘Despacito’

Luis Fonsi nabs his seventh career No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs -- and first since 2009 -- as his latest single "Despacito," featuring Daddy Yankee, climbs 2-1 on the chart dated Feb. 18.

The track — in only its third week on the chart — takes Streaming Gainer honors, increasing 47 percent in weekly U.S. streams, to 6.6 million (in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music). Song downloads also support the lift, with 8,000 sold in the tracking week (up 7 percent). The sales keep the song at No. 1 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart for a third straight week.

Fonsi, who debuted on the chart in 1998, earns his first No. 1 since “Aqui Estoy Yo” spent two weeks at the top in 2009. “Despacito” became his 30th chart hit when it debuted at No. 2 on the Feb. 4 chart.

“Despacito” also gives Daddy Yankee his fifth No. 1 on the chart and first as a featured act. He most recently spent four weeks atop the chart with “Shaky Shaky,” between November and December 2016. 

Over on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, “Despacito” leaps 77-61.

Nicky Jam Earns Fifth Airplay No. 1: Nicky Jam’s “El Amante” becomes his fifth No. 1 on Latin Airplay, hopping 5-1 with a 46 percent surge to 16.5 million audience impressions in the week ending Feb. 5. The song also grants the singer his fourth No. 1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay, where it also jumps 5-1. Over on Top Latin Albums, his album Fenix remains at No. 1 in its second week, with 6,000 equivalent units (down 55 percent).

Alex Sensation Tops Tropical Songs: Lastly, New York radio DJ Alex Sensation earns his second No. 1 on the Tropical Songs chart, and first as a lead act, as “La Mala y La Buena,” with Gente de Zona, steps 2-1 in its 13th frame. The on-air personality (real name Javier Alexander Salazar) hosts daily shows on La Mega 97.9 FM (WSKQ). Notably, that same station contributes 26 percent of the overall weekly audience points that push the song to No. 1, while sister-station WXDJ Miami (a fellow Spanish Broadcasting System station) championed the song with 79 spins.
