Rapper/singer Luh Kel debuts at No. 19 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart (dated April 27), as his breakout single “Wrong” debuts at No. 39 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, marking his first entry on a Billboard survey.
With the song’s profile aided by a dance challenge (the #WrongChallenge) on the TikTok app, it surges by 87% to 9.3 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music.
The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, each week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard‘s “Hot” song genre charts and/or consumption-based “Top” album genre rankings.
Plus, City Girls log their fourth week at No. 1 on Emerging Artists, as their track “Act Up” continues to scale the Hot 100, rising 40-36 in its seventh week.
Rounding out the Emerging Artists top five, Lauv holds at No. 2, Pinkfong places at No. 3, Calboy rises 5-4 and Mabel jumps 9-5, as her debut hit “Don’t Call Me Up” bullets at its No. 19 high on the Pop Songs airplay chart.
Seattle-based experimental metal duo Sunn 0))) (pronounced “sun”) debuts at No. 17 on Emerging Artists, as its new LP Life Metal bows at No. 22 on Hard Rock Albums with 4,000 equivalent album units earned.
Finally, singer-songwriter Soccer Mommy enters Emerging Artists at No. 50, thanks to a Record Store Day (April 13) release of her 2016 debut EP For Young Hearts, new at No. 5 on Heatseekers Albums. Nearly 2,000 copies were released and sold on green smoke vinyl, with a custom poster, for Record Store Day.
