Atlanta rapper Lil Nas X has signed to Columbia Records, Billboard can confirm.
The signing caps off a whirlwind few weeks for the artist. Spurred in part by a TikTok video challenge, his country-trap hit “Old Town Road” debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 83 last week, now rising to No. 51 for the week ending March 23. The song even hit Hot Country Songs, coming in at No. 19 before dropping off this week.
With a sample from Nine Inch Nails‘ 2008 track “34 Ghosts IV,” the song has topped 24.6 million Spotify streams since its release in early December, and its music video — a mashup of footage from the Western video game Red Dead Redemption — has surpassed 9.8 million views on YouTube.
Lil Nas X self-released his first project, Naserati, last year. Last month, he released his latest single, the guitar-tinged, mellow “BANZUP,'” which has 241,000 plays to date.
