Nearly two years after One Direction announced its hiatus, Liam Payne has become the fifth and final member of the group to release a solo track. Almost instantly, his long-awaited solo debut, “Strip That Down,” featuring Quavo, powered to No. 1 on the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart Friday morning (May 19).
The Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart measures the real-time acceleration of conversation around artists and their music on Twitter.
“Strip,” which Ed Sheeran co-wrote, first hit the Trending 140 around 7 a.m. ET after its release at midnight. Payne announced the release date on Thursday on his social media channels. The song’s lyric video has garnered 400,000 global YouTube views since its posting.
Payne’s new single means that all members of One Direction have found success going solo, a rarity among musical groups. Niall Horan’s debut single “This Town” and Harry Styles’ solo debut “Sign of the Times” also hit No. 1 on the Trending 140 after their respective releases in September and April, while Zayn topped the Trending 140 with multiple tracks from his debut album Mind of Mine in March 2016. Louis Tomlinson’s “Just Hold On,” with Steve Aoki, reached the top 10 of the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in December.
