Kool & The Gang returns with its first Billboard airplay chart hit in 10 years, as “Sexy (Where’d You Get Yours)” debuts at No. 28 on the Adult R&B Songs chart dated Aug. 13.
Prior to “Sexy,” the group was last on an airplay list for six weeks in 2006, when “Steppin’ Into Love” wrapped its chart run on the July 8, 2006-dated list. The song peaked at No. 38. Before that, the act hit No. 36 on the same chart in 2005 with “No Show.” (The Adult R&B Songs airplay chart started in 1993 — well after Kool & The Gang’s peak on the pop and R&B charts, back in the 1970s and 1980s.
The pop-funk ensemble first landed on Billboard’s charts in 1969 when its self-titled debut single reached No. 19 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The group went on to earn nine No. 1s on the chart with hits like “Hollywood Swinging” (one week at No. 1 in 1974), “Ladies Night” (three weeks in 1979) and “Joanna” (two weeks in 1984).
They scored a multitude of hits throughout the 70s and 80s, including the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Celebration,” which spent two weeks atop the chart in 1981.
WAKB, Augusta in Georgia championed the new track with the most spins in the most recent racking week (ending July 31), with 26 plays, according to Nielsen Music.
“Sexy” arrives as the group is currently in the midst of its Keepin’ The Funk Alive U.S. Tour, which runs through the end of August. Singer Walt Anderson joins as a new member of the group, led by veteran founding members: Ronald and Robert “Kool” Bell, Dennis Thomas and George Brown.
