Rising R&B artist Khalid notches his first top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B Songs chart (dated Jan. 21), as his breakthrough single “Location” leaps 18-10 in its fifth charting frame. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter concurrently earns the Hot Shot Debut with the track over on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, launching at No. 42.
It’s the best week yet for “Location” in terms of streams, with 2.9 million U.S. clicks gathered in the week ending Jan. 5 (according to Nielsen Music), a 21 percent increase. Of its total, 35 percent stem from Spotify, where the song has amassed nearly 27 million global plays.
Increased airplay also contributes to the track’s growth, as it jumps by 28 percent to 7.8 million in radio audience. The single also steps 19-18 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart, reaching a new peak in its seventh week on the list. The song from Khalid, who hails from El Paso, Texas, is receiving strong support in his home state, with Dallas’ KBFB and KKDA playing it 67 and 59 times, respectively, in the tracking week. KNDA Corpus Christi chipped in with 55 plays and KTCX Beaumont, 27. Other notable champions of “Location” include WJMH Greensboro, N.C., the leader in plays to date (nearly 550 through Jan. 8), and SiriusXM’s The Heat.
Khalid first appeared on the Billboard charts in July, when “Location” debuted on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart, which measures the volume of tweets about new artists and their songs. The song spent 21 weeks on the chart, peaking at No. 2. In November, his song “Hopeless” reached No. 24.
Khalid is set to kick off his first U.S. tour, The Location Tour, today (Jan. 12) in Chicago. The 21-date trek is set to conclude Feb. 14 in Sacramento, California.
