Kendrick Lamar’s New ‘Heart’ Starts in Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

The Pulitzer Prize winner's latest installment of his album previews comes ahead of a likely big debut for his new album on next week's charts.

Kendrick Lamar collects his 15th top 10 hit on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “The Heart Part 5” debuts at No. 5 on the list dated May 21. The song, released May 8, came days ahead of the May 13 release of the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper’s latest studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, despite not appearing on the set.

“The Heart Part 5” was released in the evening on Sunday, May 8, to digital and streaming services. The drop also came with the track’s music video, which features Lamar morphing into O.J. Simpson, Kanye West, Jussie Smollett, Kobe Bryant, Will Smith and Nipsey Hussle. The preview echoes the same play that the superstar used to introduce some of his previous LPs: “The Heart Part 3” arrived not long before his 2012 effort, good kid m.a.a.d. city, while “The Heart Part 4” premiered just weeks before 2017’s DAMN. The latter peaked at No. 11 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. (The first and third “Heart” tracks appear as standalone tracks, while the second showed on Lamar’s Overly Dedicated mixtape in 2010.)

Back to the current installment: Because the track arrived in the middle of the chart’s Friday – Thursday tracking week, “Part 5” receives only about 4.5 days of activity for its chart debut. In the week ending May 12, the song earned 20.5 million official U.S. streams and 6,000 sales downloads, according to Luminate. Thanks to those sums, the cut starts at No. 3 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs and No. 5 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.
