Katy Perry Leaps Back Into Social 50 Chart’s Top 10

The singer returns to the top 10 for the first time in six months after buzz generated by her new 'Vogue' cover shoot.

Katy Perry returns to the top 10 of Billboard’s Social 50 chart for the first time in over six months, following buzz generated by her Vogue magazine cover story.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia, Instagram and Tumblr. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended on April 13.

Perry rises 15-7 on the list dated April 29, her first top 10 visit since the Oct. 1, 2016-dated chart (No. 9) and highest rank since July 30, 2016 (No. 5).

In the week ending April 13, Perry vaulted 100 percent in Instagram reactions (up 2.9 million) and 121 percent in Twitter reactions (42,000), according to Next Big Sound.

The gains came after Perry shared links to and posted about the article and its cover photo shoot. The spread includes Perry speaking to her own activism and how “if you’re not standing for anything you’re really just serving yourself, period, end of story.”

Perry has three weeks at No. 1 on the Social 50 to her name, the last coming on the chart dated Nov. 9, 2013.

Additionally, Kendrick Lamar reaches the Social 50’s top 10 for only the second time, leaping 42-9 as anticipation brewed for new album DAMN., released April 14.

Lamar added 198,000 new Instagram followers (up 118 percent) with two new posts about the record (after deleting all of his previous photos), while snagging 259,000 mentions and 280,000 reactions on Twitter.

DAMN. is trending toward a No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200, which would give Lamar his third chart-topper. Industry forecasters currently suggest the album could earn around 475,000 equivalent album units

Speaking of new albums, Lana Del Rey re-enters the Social 50 at No. 21 following activity around promotion for her upcoming album Lust for Life, for which she announced the album artwork via social media April 11.

The post helped garner the singer 4.8 million Instagram reactions as well as 77,000 new followers on the platform.

A release date for Lust has not been announced. Thus far, the singer has released one single from the album, “Love,” which has peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 (March 11).
