Katy Perry’s ‘Rhythm’ Roars to No. 3 Debut on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks Chart

Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm," featuring Skip Marley, drums up a No. 3 debut on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks after its Feb. 10 release. Plus, Lady Gaga hits the top 10 -- twice!

Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm,” featuring Skip Marley, drums up a No. 3 debut on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart (dated Feb. 25) after its Feb. 10 release and the pair’s debut performance of the song at the 59th annual Grammy Awards two days later.

Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks (which began in June 2014) is a weekly ranking of the most shared and/or mentioned songs on Twitter in the U.S., ranked by the volume of shares over a seven-day period.

“Rhythm,” likely the first taste of Perry’s upcoming fourth studio album, was released with a lyric video on YouTube, which has earned 21.3 million global views through Feb. 16. The cut is Perry’s fourth top 10 hit since the chart began in 2014 and Marley’s first Top Tracks entry.

The pop superstar’s new single also earns a strong start on radio, debuting at No. 24 on the Pop Songs chart (which measures radio airplay on a Monday – Sunday cycle).

Thanks to the new song and performance, Perry’s Twitter mentions leap 500 percent to 116,000 for the week ending Feb. 12, according to Next Big Sound. The gain helps trigger a No. 27 re-entry on the Social 50 chart.

Just ahead of “Rhythm,” Lady Gaga scores a No. 2 re-entry for “John Wayne,” zooming past its previous No. 21 high, after its music video release on Feb. 8. The clip premiered exclusively on Apple Music before reaching other services on Feb. 9, including YouTube, where it has collected 9.8 million global views. Gaga also sports a second top 10 on the Top Tracks chart, as “Million Reasons” flies 31-4 after its feature in her Super Bowl LI halftime show (Feb. 5).

The combination of the “Wayne” video and “Reasons” rally helps power Gaga to a 363 percent gain in Twitter mentions for the week ending Feb. 12. The surge in activity boosts her 39-2 on the Social 50.

In addition, the Super Bowl showcase lifts Gaga across multiple Billboard charts. She returns to the top 10 of both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 and climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100, ranking as the week’s top musical act in the U.S.

Plus, Migos vault to a No. 9 start for “Dab of Ranch.” The tune began as a short freestyle for a relaunch of Rap Snacks potato chips, before the trio recorded a full-length version at Spotify Studios, which debuted on the streaming platform on Feb. 8. The song has registered 1.6 million global plays on the service to date.

Just beyond the top 10, Nick Jonas and Nicki Minaj ride to a No. 13 debut with “Bom Bidi Bom” from the Fifty Shades Darker film soundtrack, released Friday (Feb. 10). The soundtrack also claims a second debut this week, Sia’s “Helium,” which starts at No. 44.
