Kaleo’s ‘Way Down We Go’ Leads THR’s Top TV Songs Chart for December

Kaleo's former No. 1 Billboard Alternative Songs hit "Way Down We Go" leads THR's Top TV Songs chart, powered by Shazam, for December, thanks to its appearance in The CW's The Vampire Diaries.

Kaleo‘s former No. 1 Billboard Alternative Songs hit “Way Down We Go” leads THR’s Top TV Songs chart, powered by Shazam, for December, thanks to its appearance in The CW’s The Vampire Diaries.

Rankings for the Top TV Songs chart are based on cumulative monthly Shazam tags, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music during the same period.

“Way Down We Go,” which played in the sixth episode of The Vampire Diaries‘ eighth season (Dec. 2), leads all songs for December with 119,000 Shazam tags, 62,000 downloads sold and 5 million U.S. streams during the month, according to Nielsen Music.

The track, currently scaling the Billboard Hot 100 (98-85) and Hot Rock Songs charts (No. 6) dated Jan. 21, topped the Rock Airplay chart for two weeks in September, following its two-week rule of Alternative Songs in August. Back in March, it rose to No. 8 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. The song is from Kaleo’s second studio album, A/B, which debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart dated July 2 and has sold 99,000 copies to date.

Elsewhere on the Top TV Songs chart, now-defunct Canadian indie-pop duo Majical Cloudz debuts at No. 4 with “Downtown.” The song, featured in the fifth episode of Netflix’s The OA (all episodes arrived on the service Dec. 16) earns its chart placement on the strength of 26,000 Shazam tags, 3,000 downloads sold and 389,000 U.S. streams in December.

Although Majical Cloudz hasn’t appeared on a Billboard songs chart, the duo released four studio albums before announcing in 2016 that its latest album Are You Alone? (released in October 2015) would be its last. The act toured with Lorde on her 2014 North American tour.

Additionally, British soul singer Laura Mvula bows at No. 6 on Top TV Songs with “Show Me Love” after its appearance in Showtime’s Shameless Dec. 18. The song earned 24,000 Shazam tags, 2,000 downloads sold and 126,000 U.S. streams in December. It’s from Mvula’s second studio album, The Dreaming Room, released last summer.
