Kacey Musgraves, Lady Gaga, Brandi Carlile & More Earn Grammy-Fueled Gains on Billboard 200

Kacey Musgraves' 'Golden Hour' album re-enters the Billboard 200 albums chart straight into the top 10, following its Grammy Award win for album of the year.

Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour album rides its pair of Grammy Award wins on Feb. 10 to a return to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The set re-enters the chart dated Feb. 23 straight in at No. 9 with 35,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 14 (up 524 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 20,000 were in album sales — a gain of 735 percent.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 23-dated chart (where Golden Hour returns to the top 10 and Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard‘s websites on Wednesday, Feb. 20 (a day later than usual, owed to the U.S. Washington’s Birthday holiday, often referred to as Presidents’ Day, on Feb. 18).

Golden Hour won Grammy Awards for album of the year and best country album (both trophies were presented on-air during CBS’ live broadcast of the show), while its songs “Butterflies” and “Space Cowboy” also took home two awards, for best country solo performance and best country song, respectively. Musgraves performed the album’s “Rainbow” on the Grammy Awards and also took part in an all-star tribute performance to Dolly Parton. (“Rainbow” is now being promoted as Musgraves’ latest single at country, adult pop and adult contemporary radio stations.) Golden Hour debuted and peaked at No. 4 last April.


In total, Musgraves earned an increase of 414 percent in overall equivalent album units across all of her albums — rising to 40,000 earned in the week ending Feb. 14 (up from 8,000 the previous week). Her album sales climbed 639 percent to 22,000 (up from 3,000), while her digital song sales jumped 926 percent to 28,000 (up from 3,000).

In terms of U.S. streams, Musgraves’ catalog of songs vaulted 234 percent in on-demand streams (both audio and video), rising to 23.9 million for the week (up from 7.1 million).

Back on the Billboard 200, there are a number of other albums that are likely benefitting from Grammy Awards-related activity. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack zips 5-2 with 49,000 units (up 31 percent). The set is basking in the glow of Gaga’s performance of the album’s “Shallow” on the Grammy Awards, where the song also won a pair of trophies (including one presented during the CBS broadcast: best pop duo/group performance).


Grammy nominee and performer Post Malone climbs 6-5 with beerbongs & bentleys (39,000 units; up 10 percent). Drake, who won the Grammy for best rap song (“God’s Plan”), which was presented on-air, sees his Scorpion album gain by 4 percent (holding at No. 8 with 35,000 units).

Cardi B, who performed on the show and made Grammy history as the first solo woman to win the best rap album award, climbs 17-13 with her winning album, Invasion of Privacy (27,000 units; up 18 percent).

Performer and three-time winner Brandi Carlile surges back onto the chart with her album of the year-nominated By the Way, I Forgive You. The set (which won best Americana album, while its song “The Joke” won two trophies) vaults back onto the tally at No. 22 with 20,000 units (up 897 percent). Of that sum, 15,000 were in album sales (up 1,054 percent).

Also in the top 40 of the Billboard 200, H.E.R.’s self-titled album, which won the best R&B album trophy, rises 73-23 with 20,000 units (up 91 percent). The set’s song “Best Part” also won best R&B performance.
