K-Pop Assumes Top 6 Spots of Social 50 Chart, Led by BTS

A week after the genre ruled the top three of the ranking for the first time, K-pop doubles its dominance with the top six.

A week after BTS, EXO and NCT became the first K-pop acts to sweep the top three of Billboard’s Social 50 chart, the genre doubles its stranglehold on the chart, ruling each of the top six positions of the April 14-dated ranking.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended April 5.

For the second week in a row, BTS, EXO and NCT rank at Nos. 1-3, respectively, but a new challenger appears at No. 4, reaching both the top five and top 10 of the Social 50 for the first time.


Monsta X leaps into the top five of the Social 50, besting its previous peak of No. 12 last December. The seven-piece K-pop boyband launches 16-4 with boosts in nearly all chart metrics, including a 130 percent in Twitter mentions in the week ending April 5, according to Next Big Sound.

The group posted a livestream from its dance practice for the song “Jealousy,” which was released as part of Monsta X’s new mini-album The Connect: Dejavu on March 26, as well as other photos and videos from its promotional tour.

The EP debuted at No. 2 on the April 7-dated World Albums chart, selling 2,000 first-week copies, according to Nielsen Music – the group’s fifth top five since June 2016.

Additionally, GOT7 holds the No. 5 spot of the Social 50 for a second week in a row, while Wanna One re-enters the ranking at No. 6, two spots off its No. 4 high four weeks ago (March 17). The latter, which debuted on the chart last October, makes waves with a 25 percent leap in Instagram followers (65,000 new accounts) and 480,000 Twitter reactions. The group announced a world tour on April 1, with tour stops including four cities in the U.S.: San Jose, Dallas, Chicago and Atlanta.

Not in the top six but still worth noting on the Social 50 is Astro, the top debut on the Social 50, entering at No. 22 with 19,000 new Instagram followers and a 47 percent boost in Twitter reactions to 196,000 overall.  The K-pop sextet celebrated member Cha Eunwoo’s 21st birthday on March 30. Its most recent release, Dream Part.02, was released last November and peaked at No. 5 on World Albums.
