Justin Bieber is on course to score the cherished U.K. Christmas No. 1. But the Canadian singer could face a nervous wait for the result.
Bieber’s “Love Yourself” (Def Jam) has edged ahead of the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir’s “A Bridge Over You” (Emubands) in the race for the top spot, according to the Official Charts Company. “Love Yourself” has a lead of just 3,000 combined sales at the halfway point of the chart cycle.
Adele Breaks Record for Fastest-Selling Album in U.K. Chart History
Bieber’s “Sorry,” meanwhile, is at No. 3 on the Top 100 Official Singles Chart Update, while Grace ft G-Eazy’s “You Don’t Own Me” (RCA) and Adele’s “Hello” (XL) round out the top five.
It’s the season for festive classics, and six of the best are placed inside the Top 40: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (No. 13 via Columbia), The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl’s “Fairytale Of New York” (No. 14 via Warner Bros), Wham’s “Last Christmas” (No. 22 via RCA), Shakin’ Stevens’ “Merry Christmas Everyone” (No. 29 via RCA), Wizzard’s “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” (No. 30 via EMI) and Chris Rea’s “Driving Home For Christmas” (No. 37 via Warner Bros).
Adele’s ’25’ Cruising to Another Week at U.K. Chart Summit
The cut-off point for sales and streams to be counted towards this year’s Official Christmas Chart will be midnight on Dec. 24, Christmas Eve. Which means this year’s Christmas No. 1 will be announced on Christmas Day itself, just the fourth time it’s happened in U.K. chart history. This year’s race has extra significance as it’ll mark the first time the Christmas No. 1 will be announced on a Friday, since the unveiling of the chart was shifted from Sunday to Friday back in the summer.
Meanwhile, Adele’s 25 continues to lock-down the No. 1 position. It’s in the top position on the Top 100 Official Albums Chart Update after moving another 160,000 copies in the first three days of the chart week.
