Joy Villa, the singer who turned heads on the Grammy Awards’ (Feb. 12) red carpet with a dress emblazoned with President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again,” is heading for her Billboard chart debut and big sales.
According to initial sales reports from Nielsen Music, the artist’s album I Make the Static sold about 15,000 copies in the U.S. on Feb. 12 and 13. In the days leading up to the Grammy Awards, the 2014 album sold a negligible amount of copies. The set — which sells for only $4.95 in the iTunes Store — could debut in the top 40 of next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 4, reflecting the data tracking week ending Feb. 16), marking Villa’s first chart entry on any Billboard chart.
Based on reviews in the iTunes Store, it appears the album is generating sales largely from Trump supporters previously unaware of the singer. Reviews include sentiments like “thank you for supporting TRUMP!! Will buy now! Thanks!,” “I’m buying the album just because of the dress. Way to go girl!” and “I don’t know this artist, but it doesn’t matter. I am supporting her bravery on Grammy night for standing for what she believes, whether others agree or not.”
