Jon Batiste has announced his joint summer tour with the Dap-Kings, which has them teaming up for a New Orleans-inspired program that’ll take them coast to coast through September.
Starting in Palm Springs at the Indian Wells Music Festival on April 7, the seven-date trek will hit New Orleans Jazz Fest, Newport Folk and Newport Jazz Festivals before wrapping at Monterrey Jazz Festival on September 22.
Batiste — a native New Orleanian who nearly missed his Juilliard audition thanks to Hurricane Katrina, but famously delivered his try-out via bar pay phone — is leading a set inspired by the music of his hometown that will feature selections from Allen Toussaint’s catalog along with songs by other Big Easy greats.
Batiste recently performed with the Dap-Kings at Electric Lady Studios in New York for a Newport Folk benefit, and the upcoming tour will be their first major outing since the passing of Sharon Jones, who sang with the Brooklyn-based ensemble before her death in November 2016.
