Jeff Goldblum’s ‘Capitol Studios Sessions’ Debuts at No. 1 On Jazz Albums Chart

Jeff Goldblum scores his first No. 1 on a Billboard chart, as his debut release with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, The Capitol Studios Sessions, arrives at No. 1 on both the Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums charts with 3,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen Music.

The set, which also debuts at No. 4 on Heatseekers Albums, features guest vocals from comedian and actress Sarah Silverman, jazz trumpeter Till Brönner and and singers Imelda May and Haley Reinhart.

The album presents Goldblum’s takes on classic jazz standards, including Herbie Hancock’s 1964 classic “Cantaloupe Island,” Nina Simone’s 1967 composition “I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel to Be Free)” and Nat King Cole’s 1943 song “Straighten Up and Fly Right.”

In a September interview with Billboard, Goldblum called the album a nod to “when jazz was fun, social, sexy music, instead of something a little more esoteric.”

As well as starring in such blockbuster movies as Jurassic Park and Independence Day, the 66-year old actor has been performing a jazz variety show at Los Angeles’ Rockwell Table and Stage since the 1990s. As the show’s profile grew, he partnered with Universal’s Decca Records for his first full-length.

“As far as I can tell, everyone loves Jeff Goldblum,” Decca director of A&R Tom Lewis said in a statement after the label signed him in May. “He’s a fantastic jazz pianist, a great band leader and just about the loveliest man in the world. His love of jazz is infectious and whenever he plays he makes you feel very happy. If we can take Jeff’s music into people’s homes, then we will be helping, in our own small way, to make the world a happier place.”

Thanks to the album, Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra concurrently debut at No. 31 on Billboard‘s Emerging Artists chart.
