Dance Festivals in India Told to Add Security Following Alleged Terror Threat

Two high-profile dance festivals being held later this month in India will have increased security following an alleged terror threat from ISIS. The Sunburn and Supersonic festivals are both taking place Dec. 27-30 in Goa, a popular area for tourists. Goa’s minister of tourism Dilip Parulekar told the IANS news agency that festival organizers have been ordered to increase the number of security guards and metal detectors at the sites.
Parulekar did not elaborate on the nature of the terror threat, but said that permissions for both festivals have been suspended until organizers comply with the requests for added security. “We want the best security in view of the IS threat,” he said. “The single window permission committee headed by the chief secretary, which grants permission for such events has decided to ask the organisers of the events to increase security on site.”
Headliners at the Sunburn festival include Kygo, Martin Garrix and David Guetta. Big names at Supersonic include Axwell, Disclosure and Zedd.
The tourism minister pledged more police at the events, “but the organizers will also have to increase the security in view of the threat. The permissions will be granted once they comply with these conditions.”
Requests for comment from Sunburn representatives and Supersonic’s parent company, Viacom 18, were not immediately returned.
