Iggy Azalea Signs Multi-Year Partnership With EMPIRE

After separating from Island Records earlier this month, on Tuesday (Nov. 20), Iggy Azalea officially announced a new partnership with EMPIRE. “I’m so excited to begin a new entrepreneurial chapter in my career with EMPIRE as my partner,” the Australian MC said in a press release. “The ability to have control of my own artistic future is a long awaited and monumental change in my life. I genuinely feel I am in the best position to achieve my creative ambitions.”
The multi-year agreement will include EMPIRE — whose roster includes Tyga and Lloyd — overseeing “the release and promotion” of Azalea’s forthcoming music via its label services offerings, including her long-awaited sophomore album. “We’re excited to welcome Iggy to the EMPIRE family,” EMPIRE founder/CEO Ghazi Shami said in a statement. “Over the years, I’ve admired Iggy’s artistry, honest and direct relationship with her fans and tenacity as a businesswoman. I’m honored that we will have the opportunity to build upon her already exceptional career.”
In a series of tweets last week, Azalea said going forward she would own the masters to her future catalog and that she was now “100% independent,” though she remained mum on her landing spot. She also said the deal would be worth $2.7 million, though a rep for EMPIRE declined to comment on that figure.
“Proud to say I literally just signed my new deal/partnership!,” she announced on Twitter. “2.7mil, can sign others, own my masters + 100% independent. I’m feeling like such a bossy grown ass bitch today! Time to get back to ME. I’m so grateful & excited. Cheers!”
Though Azalea had success at the start of her career with Hot 100 standouts “Fancy” and “Black Widow” — which landed at No. 1 and No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 2014, respectively — the rapper has had difficulty in the lead up to her sophomore album. After several push backs from Def Jam, her initial label, Azalea shifted within the Universal Music Group family and, in February, joined Island Records. Despite the move, Azalea’s EP, Surviving the Summer, didn’t gain much traction, and last month she canceled her Bad Girls Tour.
