Mexicans Listen to More Music Than Global Average, According to New IFPI Report

The 2019 Music Listening survey found that 62% of respondents in Mexico are music lovers, a number that tied with the U.S. and was topped only in South Africa.

People in Mexico listen to 25.6 hours of music a week, surpassing the global average of 18 hours, according to a new survey by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The IFPI’s new Music Listening 2019 report found that 62% of respondents in Mexico described themselves as “music lovers” or “music fanatics.” That number tied with that of listeners in the United States and was topped only in South Africa, where 75% of the people surveyed said they fit that description.

Rock is Mexican listeners’ preferred genre, followed by pop and Latin pop. Regional Mexican music came in fourth in listener preferences, and reggaeton was No. 8 on the list of top ten preferences (with metal coming in at number 10).

According to the report, 95% of Mexican consumers use smartphones to listen to music; 56% listen to music or watch music videos on social media. Peak listening times were while commuting to work or school, followed by at the gym and at bars or clubs.


IFPI’s music listening report was based on global research conducted in April and May 2019 to explore the way consumers engage with and access music across licensed and unlicensed services. A representative sample of the online population aged 16-64, numbering 34,000 people in total, were surveyed in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. The study was also conducted in China and India but results from these two countries are not included in “global” figures. The twenty-one countries selected accounted for 92.6% of global recorded music market revenues in 2018, according to IFPI’s Global Music Report 2019.
