It's no secret that 2018 was huge for Drake — last year, the superstar rapper broke numerous records for his fifth album Scorpion, inspired a viral dance craze with single "In My Feelings," went on a $1 million giving spree for his "God's Plan" music video and dethroned himself atop the Billboard Hot 100 (twice).
Now, Drake's year-long reign is even more official. IFPI, the organization that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has named him the world's best-selling recording artist of 2018. He's the only artist to ever hold the prestigious title multiple times, with his first being in 2016.
“Drake has had an incredible, record-breaking year, one that is more than worthy of the title of Global Recording Artist of the Year," says Frances Moore, chief executive of IFPI. "That Drake has won this award for the second time is testament to his continued global appeal and his ability to engage and connect with fans."
It's just the latest accolade among many for the star, who recently earned a best rap song Grammy for "God's Plan." His 10-year-old mixtape So Far Gone made its commercial and streaming debut earlier this month, entering at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 — and marking his 10th top 10 album on the chart.
The independently verified IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year chart is based on sales of albums across digital, CD and vinyl formats; singles, both downloaded and physical; and streams across the calendar year. The chart includes all the music of each artist featured (not just one track or album), and uses album equivalent units to combine measurements of downloads, physical sales and streams.
K-pop boy band sensation BTS take second place on IFPI's list for 2018, following the global success of albums Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Answer, both of which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last year. See IFPI's top 10 recording artists of 2018, below.
