Taylor Swift spends a personal-best fourth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Shake It Off,” which also reaches No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart.
Plus, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd vault into the Hot 100’s top 10 with “Love Me Harder,” Tove Lo‘s “Habits (Stay High)” takes over atop Radio Songs and Hozier‘s “Take Me to Church” hits No. 1 on On-Demand Songs.
It’s Wednesday, the day that the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 is tallied, so let’s make our weekly trip through the numbers of the top 10 and more.
With its fourth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Shake” sets Swift’s longest rule. Her sole prior No. 1, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” led for three weeks in 2012.
“Shake,” the lead single from 1989, which tops the Billboard 200 for a second week with 402,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, additionally crowns the Streaming Songs chart (2-1) after six (nonconsecutive) weeks at No. 2. The song jumps by 50 percent to 16.1 million U.S. streams Nov. 3-9, according to Nielsen BDS, tacking on the chart’s top Streaming Gainer award.
“Wait,” you might ask, “how does Swift make such a big gain in streaming after her well-publicized removal of the song (and her catalog) from free streaming on Spotify?” The answer: the popularity of numerous user-generated videos (many of which have since been removed) featuring the song’s official audio; in particular, a clip set to an ’80s-styled aerobic workout made the rounds on BuzzFeed, Huffington Post and other sites, garnering more than 7 million global views before being taken down by Swift’s distribution label, Universal Music Group.
“Shake” drops completely off the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart from the No. 1 spot, which it held the past six weeks, impacted by Swift’s Spotify withdrawal.
“Shake” falls 1-2 after four weeks atop Radio Songs (128 million in audience, down 6 percent, according to BDS) and ranks at No. 3 on Digital Songs (130,000).
Meanwhile, second 1989 single “Blank Space” darts 18-13 in its second week on the Hot 100. The song adds top Airplay Gainer honors, roaring onto Radio Songs at No. 23 (49 million, up 94 percent).
Meghan Trainor‘s former eight-week Hot 100 No. 1 “All About That Bass” holds at No. 2. Still, it rebounds 2-1 for an eighth week atop Digital Songs (190,000, up 43 percent), scoring the Hot 100’s top Digital Gainer nod. “Bass” drops 1-2 on Streaming Songs after nine weeks in charge (12.2 million, up 4 percent) and slides 2-4 on Radio Songs (119 million, down 7 percent), which it led for three weeks.
More Meghan: “Bass” follow-up “Lips Are Movin” bounds 70-50 in its third week on the Hot 100, fueled largely by its 43-19 leap on Digital Songs (55,000, up 88 percent).
Maroon 5‘s “Animals” reaches a new Hot 100 high, pushing 4-3. It gains across-the-board, climbing 5-3 on Radio Songs (126 million, up 19 percent) and bulleting on Digital Songs (3-5; 114,000, up 4 percent) and Streaming Songs (10-13; 5.3 million, up 3 percent), despite backward moves on the latter two rankings.
Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High)” retreats from its No. 3 highpoint on the Hot 100 to No. 4, but retains its bullet and reigns as the new leader on Radio Songs (3-1; 131 million, up 7 percent). The song by the Swedish pop singer/songwriter is the sixth Radio Songs No. 1 this year by an act in a first visit as a lead, following introductory toppers by Trainor, Sam Smith, MAGIC!, Nico & Vinz and Iggy Azalea. Last year, three rookies ruled on their first tries: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (“Thrift Shop”), Lorde (“Royals”) and Avicii (“Wake Me Up!”)
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top five, Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj‘s No. 3-peaking “Bang Bang” holds at No. 5. (Hang on for more Grande news …)
Bobby Shmurda‘s “Hot Boy” rises 8-6 on the Hot 100 and takes over at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (3-1) and Rap Songs (2-1) charts.
OK, Grande: “Love Me Harder,” with The Weeknd, rockets from No. 24 to No. 7 on the Hot 100 following its first full week of streaming for its official video, which premiered Nov. 3. With streams accounting for more than half (55 percent) of its Hot 100 points, the collab hurtles 25-4 on Streaming Songs (7.6 million, up 109 percent). It also soars 36-18 on Digital Songs (56,000, up 65 percent) and 28-19 on Radio Songs (51 million, up 19 percent).
With the ascent of “Harder,” Grande notches her fourth Hot 100 top 10 of 2014, following “Bang,” “Break Free,” which reached No. 4, and “Problem,” featuring Azalea (No. 2), all from her sophomore album, the Billboard 200-topping My Everything. Grande is the first act with four top 10s this year, passing Azalea (three). Last year, Drake was the sole act with four top 10s, although only two were in lead roles. The last acts before Grande with four top 10s in a year as lead artists? Adele, Flo Rida and Swift in 2012.
Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” reaches a new Hot 100 peak, rising 10-8. It crowns On-Demand Songs (5-1; 3.1 million, up 19 percent) and leads Hot Rock Songs for a fourth week.
Closing out the Hot 100’s top 10, Azalea’s ” No. 3-peaking “Black Widow,” featuring Rita Ora, falls 6-9 and Jeremih‘s “Don’t Tell ‘Em,” featuring YG, descends 7-10 after rising to No. 6.
